GOLD STAR FAMILIES FAQ

Gold Star Families Memorial Monument
Dedication Ceremony FAQ's

Q: Is this monument for all Gold Star families or only those from Huntsville/Madison County/Alabama?
A: Although the monument does not list service members by name, it is intended to honor all Gold Star families who lost a loved one in military service, regardless of where or when they served.
Q: I received an invitation. How did you find me?
A: We are working with Survivor Outreach Services and other organizations to reach Gold Star families whose loved ones were lost since 2001. In an effort to identify other Gold Star families with ties to Alabama, we searched numerous resources and compiled a list of those whom we believe lost a loved one in military service and are therefore Gold Star families. However, finding family members of the fallen going back many years is a challenging task. We realize there are many people we have not reached.
Q: I'm interested in attending the Dedication Ceremony. Do I need to RSVP?
A: For planning purposes, we would appreciate knowing how many will be attending; however no one will be turned away!
Q: Will the ceremony be held rain or shine?
A: Yes.
Q: What about COVID-19?
A: This event will be conducted in accordance with the statewide COVID-19 health order for Alabama. Masks will be provided for everyone attending.

Q: What time should I arrive?

A: We encourage Gold Star families to arrive by 9:40 a.m. to have time to get registered and pick up items at the Gold Star Families Registration Tables.

Q: Will there be special seating for Gold Star families?

A: There will be some seating for Gold Star families, however space surrounding the monument is limited by topography and other features in the park.
Q: How do I get there?
A:The Huntsville Veterans Memorial is located at 200 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL. 35801.  The Monument dedication will be held on the north end of the Memorial.  Easiest access is via the two parking areas noted below.
Q: Where should I park?
A: Free public parking is available at the Train Depot Museum located at 320 Church Street Huntsville, AL 35801.  There is also parking at the Cleveland Street Parking Lot.  There will be attendants to assist you at both parking lots.
Q: Are other activities planned in conjunction with the Dedication Ceremony?
A: No. However, before or after the Ceremony, we encourage you to take time to visit the many other monuments and kiosks within the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial. In particular, the polished black granite walls in the front part of the Memorial display the names of 365 men and women from Madison County who lost their lives in war from World War I through the Global War on Terrorism.
Q: Will my loved one be honored specifically?
A: There will be no list of names of the fallen provided for the ceremony. However we would be honored if you would share a photo of your loved one and a few sentences about him or her on our Facebook page.  We also invite you to take photos of the monument after it is unveiled, after the ceremony concludes.
