The eight polished black granite markers are dedicated to major wars of the 20th and 21st century beginning with World War I and ending with the Global War on Terrorism. The markers describe the conflict and the price that was paid in human sacrifice, and are engraved with the names of over 365 Madison County servicemen who died in combat during these wars. The black granite was obtained from the same quarry as that used in the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C.
