To the right of the U.S. Flag and directly in front of the Alabama Flag is the Veteran’s Time Capsule in which veterans and families have placed personal artifacts, letters, and items reminiscent of their service and the wars in which they fought. The capsule is placed in a concrete vault and buried in the ground directly below the bronze plaque indicating its location. The granite pedestal directly behind and above the Capsule displays a bronze plaque of “hands receiving a folded flag” indicative of the ceremony of the presentation of the folded flag of a fallen serviceperson during interment to the family, with the words “On behalf of a grateful nation”. The Time Capsule will be opened in November, 2062. This will do in the presence of the Veterans Memorial Ambassadors who will then assist in the selection of new items to be interred for another fifty year cycle beginning 2062.
