Battlefield Memorial Walkway

The Battlefield Memorial Walkway leads up to the Battlefield Memorial. Along the walkway are plaques that discuss the meaning and serve as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that the fallen warrior has given in service to country. The five plaques along the walkway tell the story of sacrifice and reflect the ultimate sacrifice made by so many on battlefields around the globe.
Plaque 1: The origins of the Battlefield Memorial (also known as Fallen Soldier Battlefield Cross) appear to lie in the American Civil War. Until this period, fallen soldiers were buried where they lay, often by opposing forces, with crude markers being erected.
Plaque 2: During World War II and Korean War as units rapidly advanced, Soldiers and Marines would often bury the bodies of their fallen comrades in shallow graves. Once again placing a rifle with bayonet fixed into the ground and a helmet on top to indicate that here lies the remains of an American fighting man.
Plaque 3: During Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, the Battlefield Memorial attracted popular attention, with numerous units erecting them to pay tribute to their comrades.
Plaque 4: Although the Battlefield Memorial is not an official military honor, it does play a part in the memorial ceremony as a visible reminder of the fallen soldier.
Plaque 5: The helmet and identification tags signify the fallen soldier, their name never to be forgotten. The inverted rifle with bayonet signals a time for prayer, a break in the action to pay tribute to a fallen comrade. The combat boots represent the final march of the soldier’s last battle.
The final plaque at the entrance to the Battlefield Memorial has a poem in remembrance of the fallen warrior and reads:
“I did my duty,
I paid the supreme price,
I pray you’ll remember,
My sacrifice.
My life was short,
I did my best.
God grant me peace,
In my eternal rest.”

The Battlefield Memorial recognizes, remembers, and Honors all Fallen Soldiers with a bronze statue which will be placed on the hill behind the Alabama State Flag. The Battlefield Memorial is a symbolic remembrance on the battlefield or at the base camp for a soldier who has been killed.
