Madison County’s honored heroes are represented on this marker. The marker contains the names of three soldiers and one airman who resided in Huntsville/Madison County and were awarded the nations’ highest military decoration for valor in action against an enemy of the United States: Private Richard Taylor earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War for heroism on Oct 19, 1864 at Cedar Creek, VA, MSGT Paul Bolden was awarded the Medal of Honor during WW II for heroism on Dec 23, 1944 at Petit-Coo, Belgium, 1LT. Cecil H. Bolton was awarded the Medal of Honor during WWII for heroism on Nov 2, 1944 at Mark River, Holland, and Col (USAF) Leo Thorsness earned the MOH on April 19, 1967 for heroism over North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. COL Thorsness was also a POW for 6 years and held in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, North Vietnam.
